ABOUT THE SERVICE

A specialty as old as medicine itself

General surgery is a branch of medicine that treats diseases of many parts of the human body through surgical therapy. The focus of the service spans trauma, the gastrointestinal tract, abdominal organs, neck, endocrine glands, peripheral arteries, soft tissue, and breast conditions.

General surgeons are called general because they are trained to operate on all regions of the body. It is the only surgical specialty that teaches the foundational principles of surgery — including fluids and electrolytes, homeostasis, and perioperative care — making it the discipline in which every surgeon is first grounded.

HISTORICAL NOTE

"Surgery is as old as medicine itself."

Evidence of trepanation found on skulls from the ancient Burnt City of Zabul suggests that surgical intervention has been practised for thousands of years. Today, general surgery continues that lineage — with modern anaesthesia, imaging, and evidence-based technique.
