PATIENT RIGHTS CHARTER Your Rights, |
Five pillars of care |
01
Right to Receive Optimal Care
Care must be respectful, honest, fair, prompt and free from discrimination. It should account for special needs such as deafness, childhood, or foreign language, be based on current knowledge and the patient's interests, avoid pain and suffering, and in emergencies be provided regardless of cost.
02
Right to Adequate Information
Information must cover possible costs, applicable insurance, names and roles of the care team, the Charter itself, advantages and disadvantages of treatment, alternatives, how to reach the attending physician, education about the illness, and access to records.
03
Right to Free Choice & Decision
When possible, patients may choose their attending physician, the diagnostic or treatment centre, and seek a second opinion. After being informed, patients may accept or refuse the proposed treatment (except in emergency situations), and are given adequate time to decide where no risk is posed.
04
Right to Privacy & Confidentiality
Patient privacy must be respected and the facilities required must be provided. Only the patient, the care team and legally authorised individuals may access medical information. The presence of a trusted companion during diagnostic procedures is a right of the patient, unless medically inadvisable.
|
05 Right to an Effective Complaints System Patients may file a complaint with the competent authorities without any disruption to the quality of care they receive, and will be informed of the outcome through the same channels. |
